We put Bingo down yesterday. It broke my heart.
I don't think I've ever cried so hard in my life. Even my extremely stoic mother cried.
It was for the best though. It turns out she had cancer. Very fast developing cancer. There was nothing we could have done.
At least she's not in pain anymore.

It still hurts though.

I j ust received TV Guide's newest issue (March 24-30). There's an article entitled "How Far Can TV Go?: Sex on TV" It talks about how graphic sex sccenes are on TV these days. It has a "Sex on TV Time Line". For 1997, it has a picture of Alyson Hannigan as Willow and the caption says "Buffy the Vampire Slayer gives lesbian witches everywhere a reason to cheer.

Also, it has "TV's 10 Hottest Scenes Ever". What's number one you ask?

Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Spike (James Marsters) beat the hell out of each other before doing the deed on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2001).

The shooter walked out from behind a screen in a geology ocean sciences class in a 600-seat lecture hall and opened fire. There are about 162 registered students in the class. The gunman used a shotgun and two handguns. The police know the identity of the gunman but are not releasing it at this time. He was not a student at the DeKalb campus, but it appears he was a student elsewhere. At least three victims are in critical condition, eight are in stable condition and six are in good condition. In a separate article, student Edward Robinson told NY Times that the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall.”It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot,” Robinson said. ”He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at.”

It seems hard to believe that this could happen yet again. Luckily, there were far less fatalities than Virginia Tech. However, the Virginia Tech shootings and the NIU shootings are eerily similar. They both happened inside a lecture hall. The gunmen both (allegedly) committed suicide. The shooters did not say anything before opening fire on the class; they simply walked in calmly, like it was an everyday occurrence. There’s no doubt that the NIU shooter was also a ‘troubled student’ with a ‘dark, silent past’ and his parents had ‘no idea’.

As long as each school shooting is treated as a giant media spectacle, these massacres will continue. I’m sure there are a few prospective shooters following every word of this latest coverage, fondling their .357s, and planning on how they will do it differently when it comes time for their 15 minutes of fame.

This affects me personally because my cousin Megan is a current student there. Megan called her mom and started telling her what was going on but the phone cut her off. Many of the phone lines in that area were jammed; most likely due to the fact that everyone was trying to call home. Many people couldn’t get through to their loved one to see if they were all right. Fortunately, Megan is okay. She was in one of her classes when this incident occurred and the school went into total lockdown.

I still have so many questions. How could this have happened again? How did the shooter get in through the emergency exit? Aren’t they normally locked on the outside? Did he have the door propped open or obtain the key to it in advance? Wasn’t the campus considered a “gun free zone”? Where was campus security? Will I be safe at college next year?

My sister's husband, Derek, is in the army and he's in Iraq right now.

Berlin, Derek's roommate and best friend committed suicide yesterday.

Unfortunately, this type of incident is all too common:
The overall U.S. suicide rate is 10.8 per 100,000.
The average soldier suicide rate is 13.5 per 100,000.

Please keep Berlin's family (and Derek) in your prayers.
